Blog | The Government's Green Deal - How It Works

The Green Deal is a new government initiative that has been launched to help homeowners and businesses in England and Wales to make energy saving improvements to their property, without having to pay the costs upfront.

The energy saving improvements that you can make under the Green Deal include solar panels, wind turbines, draught-proofing, heating, double glazing, and insulation such as loft or cavity wall insulation.

Basically, the Green Deal allows you to install new green technology in your home, and instead of paying upfront you will pay back the costs through your energy bill over a period of time.

This is a step by step guide of how the Green Deal works:

1. You approach an installer with Green Deal provider status and talk to them the improvements you would like to make.
2. A green deal assessor will then survey your home or business so they can produce a report which covers your property's performance and any potential improvements issued. To be eligible for the Green Deal this report must show that the expected energy savings outweigh the cost of any improvements.
3. The provider will then arrange for a Green Deal installer to carry out the work, and once this is done you should start to see the difference in your energy bills.
4. Your Green Deal finance will be paid through your electricity bills in installments and will stay with the property until paid off - if you move from the property the new owners will take on the payments.

There is also a cashback scheme as part of the Green Deal; it is a first-come, first-served offer where householders in England and Wales can claim cashback from the government on the energy saving improvements that they install!
